This year marked the first time the Mi’kmaw language conference L’nui’sultinej (Let Us Speak in Mi’kmaw) was held at the Allison Bernard Memorial High School at the Eskasoni First Nation. With this year’s theme on “Partnerships for First Nation Language Revitalization,” Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre staff not only participated in the sessions available, but also had the opportunity to set up an information booth. Highlights of the conference included Ernest Johnson’s session “Understanding Animal Names” and the launch of “Glooscap Tales,” a set of eight graphic novels that will be sold through Scholastic Canada and will be available later this spring. Also the use of colour-coded bracelets this year, denoting the person’s understanding of the Mi’kmaw language, was an extremely useful tool.
