We’re excited to announce that this year we’re taking part in #GivingTuesdayCa – a global generosity movement that brings people and communities together in a celebration of giving. With the help of Mi’kmaw Comedian, Candy Palmater, we’re getting the word out and raising the profile of the future Centre.

Starting on November 30, GivingTuesday, every dollar donated to help #BuildTheVision for the future Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre will be matched up to a max of $10,000, by an anonymous donor who wishes to honour the life and contributions of Mi’kmaw Elder Doug Knockwood.

The late Doug Knockwood was a respected Elder from Indian Brook First Nation. Doug spent his life dedicated to helping his people and community. He co-founded treatment programs for Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia and served as an alcohol and drug counsellor and treatment director for 30 years. After retirement in 1991, Doug continued to share the wealth of his experience and knowledge in advocating for his people and the issues they face, and in 2003 received the Grand Chief Donald Marshall Sr. Elder Achievement Award recognizing his lifelong contributions to the Mi’kmaw community. Doug passed away on June 16, 2018, leaving behind his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His memory and contributions continue to guide the Mi’kmawey Debert project today, and his life and stories will be celebrated and honoured forever in the future Centre’s exhibition galleries.

Donate today to help #BuildTheVision for the future Centre.
