Mi’kmaw cultural centre to preserve oral history, recover artifacts from U.S.

The Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre is committed to preserving and sharing Mi’kmaw history, language, and culture. As part of this work, Mi’kmawey Debert is leading efforts to bring Mi’kmaw belongings home from institutions like the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. These belongings—many of which were taken from Mi’kmaw communities over generations—include regalia, traditional games, and other items of deep cultural and spiritual significance. In addition to caring for these belongings, Mi’kmawey Debert is dedicated to recording and preserving Mi’kmaw oral histories, ensuring that the voices of our Elders and knowledge holders are passed on to future generations. The Home to Mi’kma’kik project is central to this work, supporting the return and proper care of these belongings in Mi’kma’kik, where they belong. With $36.3 million raised toward the $48.3 million goal, construction of the centre is moving forward, bringing us closer to opening a space where Mi’kmaw stories, language, and belongings will thrive.
