In 2014, Mi’kmawey Debert initiated the Key Stories Project. Elders, knowledge holders and community members have worked with staff to identify the important stories they want to tell and share.
At the Bear River First Nation, the Key Stories is “journeying wherever the stories take us” as a community — out on the land, visiting with Elders, gathering cultural resources, and honouring ancestral places.
Over the last three years, MDCC had the honour to record siblings Leo Peters, Kay Peters Best, and the late Bazil Peters as they share stories of their father and childhood living in Bear River hunting, trapping, fishing, and guiding along the “Turnpike.”
Watch the seven-film series and hear first-hand accounts of the stories that helped shape the community during the mid-20th century.
