Bridging Generations: Mi’kmawey Debert Unearths Cultural Texts to Empower Future Narratives

The Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre team, including Geordy Marshall, Ashley Sutherland, and Elder Barbara Sylliboy, recently visited the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives and the American Philosophical Society to reclaim Mi’kmaw cultural records, some dating back to the 1600s.

The team reviewed over 6,000 pages, uncovering valuable records, like linguist Albert Samuel Gatschet’s notebooks containing Mi’kmaw names and cultural practices.
