The article Shared Stewardship: Strengthening Connections Between NMAI and MDCC explores the growing collaboration between the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre (MDCC) in strengthening the stewardship of Mi’kmaw cultural belongings. In July, NMAI conservators traveled to Mi’kma’kik to immerse themselves in Mi’kmaw culture, participating in hands-on activities such as basketmaking, quillwork, and beading with Mi’kmaw artists. This experience deepened their understanding of the significance of these belongings, highlighting their connection to place, history, and living cultural practices. MDCC staff emphasized that stewardship is not just about preservation but also about storytelling and relationships, reinforcing the need for these belongings to be cared for within their own communities.
The visit also underscored the importance of bringing Mi’kmaw belongings home. While NMAI has long housed these items, the visit reinforced the need for their return to Mi’kma’kik, where they truly belong. Seeing the cultural practices in their homeland reshaped how the conservators approach their work, strengthening ties between the institutions. The collaboration between MDCC and NMAI continues with a shared commitment to ensuring these belongings are returned with respect and care, not just as artifacts but as integral parts of Mi’kmaw culture and identity.
